Presented by Hilary-Joy Virtanen, PhD.

As the Finnish national epic, Kalevala is a work of great significance to Finns worldwide.
In Finland, references to the epic are seen every day in people’s names, in commercial
products, in public art, and even in the music of heavy metal bands. Despite its importance
to Finnish identity, though, it is also a largely unread book. Join Hilary Virtanen of
Finlandia University in an introduction to the epic. We will learn about its origins in
traditional folk poetry and its creation into a literary epic by the 19th century scholar Elias
Lönnrot, as well as the stories that the epic contains.

FASM members will be sent the zoom link the Monday before the event. Others interested
should Email: and the link will be sent to you.
